Snowshoe Hikes
Snowmobiling

In January, everyone lays back in Shady Cove.  This is a time that we like to spend with our family and friends, watching football, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, sledding and yes, fishing.

If you didn't take my advise last year to go snowshoeing, you really missed out a fun activity that your whole family can do!  Crater Lake offers Free, Ranger-Guided Snowshoe Hikes every Saturday & Sunday at 1:00 p.m.  This event is going on now through the month of April The hikes cover a mile of moderately difficult terrain through forest, meadows and along the crater's rim, and last for about 90 minutes.  This is so much fun and great exercise.  If you don't have snowshoes, they will provide them free of charge, so you don't have any excuse.  Make your reservation today by calling:  541-594-3100

33rd Annual Rod & Custom Show is a fun family event benefiting children with disabilities

This Southern Oregon event has raised over $412,000 for charity

CENTRAL POINT, OR – Over 100 selected hot rods, custom cars and specialty vehicles from throughout the western states will show off at the 33rd Annual Southern Oregon Rod & Custom Show charity event, presented by the Rogue Valley Street Rods club, February 20 and 21. The event takes place indoors in the Compton Arena, Padgham Pavilion, and the Robert and Phyllis Mace Watchable Wildlife Center , as well as in the Olsrud Arena, at the Jackson County Fairgrounds & Expo Park in Central Point, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Proceeds from the Rod & Custom Show go to local children diagnosed with developmental diseases and disabilities. These children are served by the Child Development and Rehabilitation Center (CDRC) of the Oregon Health and Science University . Last year’s show drew nearly 7,000 in attendance and raised $31,500 for the CDRC. In its 32-year history, the Rod & Custom Show has raised over $412,000 for charities, with $400,385 going to the CDRC. This year’s featured CDRC Child is Abby, a six-year-old local resident. In all, Rogue Valley Street Rods is assisting 60 children and their families this year throughout Southern Oregon, including Jackson, Josephine, Klamath, Curry and Lake counties.

Vehicles of special interest include Tim and Pat Smith’s Bonneville Salt Flats car, with a body from an F-105 drop fuel tank and powered by a 1954 Olds 324 engine. The Florence couple’s vehicle also boasts six Stromberg 97’s on a 1950’s Edelbrock manifold, with a Columbia two-speed rear end.

Ken Silva, from Redding , will show his white 1956 Ford F-100 pickup, 2009 Best of Show winner, Orland , California

Ray Dalke, from Grants Pass , will feature his red 1941 Ford Convertible, powered by a balanced and tweaked 350, 700 r-4 tranny, and featuring a full leather interior.

Bob Grover, also from Grants Pass , was a best of show winner at Las Vegas with his 1981 Peterbuilt show truck. The vehicle is bright red and chrome with ceramic tile floorboards.

Mark Daley of Thunder Struck Custom Bikes won the "Artistry in Iron Master Builders Championship" in Las Vegas with his custom “Sniper." The bike took 1st place in the by-invitation-only contest. Only 20 builders were selected to compete and Daley won it all to become a National Champion. This creation will be on display.

In addition to the vehicles on display, the 2010 Rod & Custom Show will host a raffle for a Chevrolet 350 Motor, a Chevy Turbo 350 Automatic Transmission, a certificate for $500 in tires or wheels, $500 in groceries and a Rogue River dinner trip for four. Kids can enter a drawing for one of two bicycles and a third bike will be raffled off. Adding to the fun will be valve cover races and a coloring contest. There will be refreshments and three free $100 drawings. In the Padgham Pavilion, the Mace Center and the Olsrud Arena, 70 vendors will have commercial and product displays. Cars will be for sale in the “Car Corral.”

Admission is $7 for adults, $2 for kids 6-12 and free for five and younger. There is also free admission to members of the military in uniform. Parking is free.

About the Child Development and Rehabilitation Center
The CDRC is the region’s most comprehensive resource for children with special needs. It helps empower children, teens and adults to lead the most productive and rewarding lives possible regardless of their disability or health needs. The CDRC primarily treats kids who have diagnoses of either cerebral palsy or developmental delay. Other diagnoses include spina bifida, behavioral problems, craniofacial disorders or genetic syndromes. The money generated by the Rod & Custom Show helps buy needed items like braces, special shoes, wheelchairs, computers and conversions of vans for wheelchair lifts.
